How Shell & SRF Foundation Are Transforming ITIs with EV Skill Labs — And Why India's Workforce Needs It Now

June 18, 2026

The Shell–SRF EV Skill Lab initiative gets several things right that so many CSR-led skilling programs miss: it invests in the physical infrastructure, not just the content; it trains the trainers, not just the students; and it aligns to real industry outcomes, not vanity metrics.

5M+ EV jobs expected by 2030 in India | 14,000+ITIs across India ready for upgrade | 0 EV-specific curriculum in most ITIs today

India's EV revolution is accelerating — but the workforce isn't keeping up

India's electric vehicle sector is on an unprecedented growth curve. With government mandates pushing for 30% EV penetration by 2030 and investments pouring into domestic manufacturing, the transition is no longer a distant vision — it's happening on the ground, right now.

But there's a widening crack in this story. While factories churn out EVs and charging infrastructure expands across cities, the technicians, mechanics, and battery specialists needed to maintain, repair, and service this ecosystem are simply not there. India's 14,000+ Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) — the backbone of vocational education — are largely still teaching internal combustion engine (ICE) skills from decades-old syllabi.

"The next wave of EV growth will stall not from a lack of vehicles — but from a shortage of skilled hands to service them."

The Initiative

Where Shell & SRF Foundation step in — with intent

The Shell Foundation and SRF Foundation have recognized this critical gap and are taking decisive, ground-level action. Their collaborative initiative to establish dedicated EV Skill Labs within select ITIs across India is one of the most significant investments in future-ready technical education the country has seen in recent years.

These aren't token computer labs with a few simulation modules. These are fully equipped, industry-grade EV skill labs — complete with EV powertrain setups, battery management systems (BMS), charging hardware, diagnostic tools, and live EV systems that students can actually work on.

The goal is clear: to take an ITI student from zero EV knowledge to job-ready EV technician competency within a structured, industry-aligned curriculum — and to do it at scale.

What's Being Built

Four pillars of the EV Skill Lab model

Hands-on EV Hardware
Real EV components — motors, battery packs, inverters, and charging stations — installed in labs for practical learning.
Industry-Aligned Curriculum
Modules co-designed with OEMs and EV companies to reflect actual job roles and diagnostic standards.
Trainer Upskilling
ITI instructors are trained and certified on EV technology before they teach — ensuring quality from the source.
Industry Placement Bridge
Direct linkages with EV companies, service centers, and fleet operators to convert training into employment.

Our Perspective at SkyySkill

Why this matters — and what still needs to happen

At Skyy Skill Academy & SkyySkill Labs™ , we work at the intersection of emerging technology education and industry-ready skilling. We've seen firsthand how the right infrastructure and curriculum can transform a student's trajectory from uncertain to confident, from untrained to employed.

The Shell–SRF EV Skill Lab initiative gets several things right that so many CSR-led skilling programs miss: it invests in the physical infrastructure, not just the content; it trains the trainers, not just the students; and it aligns to real industry outcomes, not vanity metrics.

This is exactly the kind of systemic, upstream investment that India's skilling ecosystem needs more of — not one-off workshops, but enduring infrastructure embedded within existing institutions.

That said, the challenge of scale remains real. With 14,000+ ITIs and millions of students annually, even 100 well-equipped EV labs are a drop in the ocean. The next frontier must involve open-sourcing the model, enabling private skill partners, and accelerating through digital-physical hybrid delivery.

The Opportunity Ahead

For Indias youth — and for those who train them

An EV-certified ITI graduate today commands a premium in the job market. EV service centers are growing faster than they can hire. Fleet operators running electric buses and two-wheelers are scouting for technicians who understand battery diagnostics, not just oil changes.

For states like Odisha, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra — where ITIs run at high student capacity but low industry alignment — EV Skill Labs can be catalytic. They offer students a rare dual advantage: a government-recognized certification AND a skill set that is immediately monetizable in a growing industry.

At SkyySkill, we believe that every student who walks out of a credentialed EV lab is a living proof point that the future of work is not something that happens to India — it's something India can train for, prepare for, and lead.
