The National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Chennai in Tamil Nadu completed an EV lab in January 2026 that operates as the institute's EV Centre of Excellence.
The lab has 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler simulators, IoT-enabled transmission and drivetrain test benches, a PMSM motor dyno with regenerative braking, lithium-ion battery test systems and high-capacity battery pack testers. RFID-enabled charging station workbenches, cut-section EV component models, smart BMS-equipped battery packs and complete tool, safety and maintenance infrastructure round out the setup.
The PMSM dyno loads the motor much as a road would, so trainees can watch torque, speed and current change and see energy return to the battery under regenerative braking. The RFID workbenches reproduce the authorisation step a driver goes through at a public charger.
Trainees study drivetrain behaviour on the IoT test benches, analyse cells and packs on the battery test systems, practise charging protocols at the RFID workbenches and troubleshoot components with real-time data monitoring. These tasks prepare them for roles such as EV service technician, battery technician and charging station technician.
With electric two-wheeler and four-wheeler production growing across Tamil Nadu, a Chennai institute that covers the full service chain, from cell testing to charger handover, gives its trainees skills that local employers can use from day one.
