Diploma students at Government Polytechnic Mayurbhanj in Odisha are introduced to EV drivetrain systems and electric mobility components in an Electric Vehicle Basic Training Lab completed in August 2024.

The core of the lab is an electric scooty training model fitted with a BLDC hub motor, smart controller, wiring harness, DC-DC converter, digital instrument cluster, lighting systems and keyless anti-theft features. Alongside it are a high-voltage and low-voltage EV wire harness training module and a hub motor cut-section model on a display stand, which shows the internal construction of the motor.

Separating high-voltage and low-voltage circuits on the harness module teaches the first rule of EV safety: the traction side and the accessory side are isolated, and each needs its own handling procedure.

Students trace how the controller, DC-DC converter and instrument cluster connect through the wire harness, study the inside of a BLDC hub motor on the cut-section model, and practise EV assembly, diagnostics and basic system operation on the scooty trainer. These tasks build towards roles such as EV assembly technician and electric two-wheeler service technician.

Because the trainer is built on a scooter, the most common electric vehicle on Indian roads, what students learn applies directly to the vehicles they will service.
